Christ Church Pantry-South Aston
More people are struggling in Birmingham. With the rising cost to all households, many are struggling to pay bills. Our response as a church was to open a local pantry as a preventative approach to food poverty, reducing the risk of household hunger
The local pantry is open on Thursday morning from 9.30 am to 11.30am mid-day at South Aston United Reformed Church 62 Upper Sutton Street Birmingham B6 5BN. Local Pantry is a membership food shop that enhances communities and is a preventative approach to food poverty, reducing the risk of household hunger.
Our Pantry is:
-
Member-run: Our pantry operates along cooperative lines, and many volunteers are members too.
-
Open to all: You don’t need a referral - anyone who lives in the area served by our Pantry can join. https://your-local-pantry.force.com/s/member-sign-up
-
Long-lasting: You can join for as long as you want, and can choose to go every week or just occasionally.
Our pantry stocks an abundant and wide range of top-quality food including fresh fruit & veg, frozen and chilled food, meat and dairy products, and long-life tinned and packaged food.
Our members pay a small subscription of £5.00 per week and in return, they can choose groceries worth many times more, often saving up to £1,000 a year on shopping bills.
Our pantry is like just like any other shop, in that you choose the food you want from the shelves.
The pantry is run by uniformed staff and volunteers who manage the stores with hand-held technology.
Our pantry already has a cherished role as a neighbourhood hub and will be a springboard to other initiatives and ideas, such as cookery classes, volunteering opportunities, and training.
